Why recaulking is done properly or not at all
Running a new bead over old caulk is the most common shortcut, and it fails within months because new silicone does not bond to old silicone. Every job we do starts with stripping the old material, removing residue, cleaning the joint and letting it dry fully.
In showers we also check the joint gap. A gap that is too wide needs a backer rod first; a joint that keeps cracking can point to movement in the tub or wall that should be fixed before it is sealed again.
Window and door caulking
Window caulking is one of the most requested jobs we do before winter. Exterior caulking around windows and doors takes a beating from Toronto winters. Freeze-thaw cycles open up gaps that let in drafts and water. We cut out cracked sealant, check the joint and apply an exterior-grade product rated for temperature swings, so the seal moves with the frame instead of tearing.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a bathtub be recaulked?
Typically every few years, or as soon as you see cracks, gaps, peeling edges or black mould that does not wipe off. Mould under the bead means water is already getting behind it.
Can you caulk over the old caulk?
We do not. New silicone does not bond well to old silicone, so the seal fails early. We remove the old caulk completely before applying new.
How long before I can use the shower?
Most silicone needs about 24 hours to cure before it gets wet. We will tell you the exact cure time for the product we use on your job.
Do you do small caulking jobs?
Yes. A single tub or a few windows is a normal job for us, and small caulking jobs can usually be booked within a week.
